What is an ECA?
The Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme is designed
to encourage UK businesses to reduce carbon emissions,
which contribute to climate change by encouraging them to
purchase Carbon Trust approved energy-saving equipment.
The incentive for the retail sector is two fold, firstly, ECA
qualifying energy saving- products are certified highly energy
efficient and should produce significant long-term financial
benefits by reducing energy bills. Secondly, tax breaks
provide upfront tax relief, enabling businesses to claim
100% first-year capital allowances delivering a cash flow
boost and shorter payback periods on investment. Interest
free, unsecured loans are also available to help the retail
sector bring its refrigeration and cooling equipment ‘up-to-
scratch’.
When combined with a third party ECA qualifying display
cabinet Hubbard HZS Zenith Scroll Packaged Condensing
Units offer the maximum efficiency for capital outlay and
installation costs delivering optimum cash flow.
Capital allowances and ECAs are claimed in a business’s tax
return. For tax purposes, your business also needs to keep
records of the purchase of plant and machinery, including
energy-saving equipment.
Claiming capital allowances and ECAs is straightforward but
it’s worthwhile talking to your business’s accountant at an
early stage to let them know that your business has incurred
qualifying expenditure. The accountant can let you know
what records they need you to provide so that they can
complete your business’s tax return.
Your business can claim an ECA on the cost of qualifying
equipment, transportation of the equipment to the site and
for direct installation costs. For more information visit

Look out for the ETL symbol
when procuring new equipment. The
symbol shows that a
product has been
independently
assessed against
published criteria
and is on the ETPL.

What is an ECA?
Enhanced Capital Allowances offer tax relief for businesses investing in
Low Carbon Technologies (energy efficient products).
Who administers them?
The Carbon Trust is an independent company funded by the government. Their
role is to help the UK move to a low carbon economy by helping businesses
and the public sector reduce carbon emissions now and capture the opportunities
of low carbon technologies. Hubbard Products is the World’s first manufacturer
of Packaged Condensing Units to be successful in gaining certification
and to be admitted to the Energy Technology List by the Carbon Trust.
What is the Energy Technology List (ETL)?
The ETL is a list of products qualifying for an ECA as produced by the Carbon Trust in conjunction with the
Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Inland Revenue.
What is a Capital Allowance?
When companies purchase a Packaged Condensing Unit in normal circumstances they can deduct a portion of its
cost from their tax bill over the following 10 years.
What is a Enhanced Capital Allowance?
As an incentive to invest in energy efficient products an ECA allows businesses
to deduct 100% of the cost of qualifying Packaged Condensing Units from
their tax bill in one year. On the 4th January 2010 the Hubbard Zenith
HZS Packaged Condensing Unit range was the UK’s first system to
qualify as an ECA.
Who Qualifies?
Enhanced Capital Allowances are only available to the end user providing they pay company tax.
Excluded are Government establishments, the NHS, MOD, Schools etc.
